Blue Alpine Gentian is a stunning, colourful piece that attracts the eye to the natural beauty of an alpine flower.

Its bright ultramarine, cobalt and light violet hues highlight this beautiful flower as anything but straight ‘blue’.  In midday light the blues shine through strongly, whereas at night the violet tones shift forward. 

Story behind the work

Blue Alpine Gentian was created to demonstrate the concept of 'shift'. It first appeared in Sea Scents Letter™️ No.6 'The one about shift' (limited edition).

I was drawn to the intensity of the flower's blues, which drew me in - shifted me towards the flower. Once I began to draw the work, the experience of 'shift' became even more real, as the colours changed throughout the day.

The artwork came to life over the timespan of a month or more, with at least thirty hours of drawing. Its unique colours presented an exquisite challenge - the particular shades of bright blue and violet were almost impossible to capture, requiring colours that didn't seem to exist. Finally new colours, a new technique and apparently illogical colour combinations brought it to life. 

The Blue Alpine Gentian flower is found in many alpine regions around the world, from Germany to New Zealand. It has been a delight to connect the viewer with its colour and vibrance.
